  • The UC Board of Regents approved two campus projects for UC San Diego.
  • The Triton Center will include student and mental health services and the alumni center.
  • The Ridge Walk North Living and Learning Neighborhood will accommodate 2,400 undergraduate students on campus.

The University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) just got clearance to build two new campus projects poised to boost student life.

The University of California Board of Regents this week approved plans for UC San Diego’s new Student Triton Center and Ridge Walk North Living and Learning Neighborhood. Construction is expected to start this summer.

“Designed to greatly enhance the student experience, these projects mark an exciting milestone for UC San Diego,” Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said in a statement.

“They offer new housing and expanded academic space, support interdisciplinary research and cultivate community among students and our regional neighbors — all in pursuit of the intellectual, physical, and cultural transformation of our campus.”

The Triton Center complex will be a “welcoming epicenter for campus activity,” comprised of multiple buildings including a Student Health, Mental Health, and Well-Being Building with urgent and primary care services, a Student Academic Resources Building, and an Alumni and Welcome Center with event space and an art gallery.

The Ridge Walk North Living and Learning Neighborhood is expected to have space for 2,400 beds for undergraduate students as well as 19 new classrooms, a lecture hall, student dining facilities, study spaces, and outdoor gathering areas.

The complex is the last of three new housing developments that will add more than 6,000 beds to the campus by 2025.

North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood opened in 2020 with residential space for 2,000 undergraduates, and the Theatre District Living and Learning Neighborhood is expected to open in fall 2023 with an additional 2,000 beds.

Currently, the campus has around 41,000 total students enrolled, with just under 32,000 undergraduate students. This number is expected to rise with the University of California system’s effort to boost enrollment, particularly for California residents.
